In front of the SGA senate, Dean Joyce Jones proposed a way to alleviate the parking issues on campus.
"I think that a lot of students will use the shuttle," she said. "You've heard people complain about how far they have to park (from class)."
Due to problems with the city-wide bus system, which Augusta State University students get to use for free, a committee of three students is going to be assigned to analyze the proposed plan to add a campus-wide shuttle service. If the plan is approved, it will then have to be approved by the Board of Regents.
"I think (the plan) is feasible," said Andre Goodman, president of SGA, "but there definitely has to be some thought (in officially proposing the plan). You have to give recommendations (on the plan) that actually make sense."
According to the proposed plan, a $25 shuttle fee will be added to the fees that are included in tuition. Also in the plan is the $10 fee for a parking decal per semester. Students will still get to ride the Augusta Transit buses anywhere in the city. In all, the plan will cost students $35 for fall and spring semesters and $25 for the summer semester.
Even though students will see a hike in parking fees, the payment plan will not only add between $20,000 and $40,000 a year for parking revenue, but it will still be one of the cheapest parking plans in the University System of Georgia.
According to Jones, the university has previously relied on the Augusta Transit system for students, but the city, in the midst of massive budget cuts, has had to cut back on stops.
The plan proposed that two shuttle buses go to each building on campus, including Christenberry Fieldhouse. The trek will take around 30 minutes, according to Jones.
The university has already conducted talks with Horizon, a company that already provides vehicles for athletic travel.
Also included in the plan is that every student at Augusta State will receive a parking decal. The decal will hang from the rearview mirror and can move with the student from car to car rather than having students have to go to Public Safety and sign up for a temporary decal if they have to bring another car to school.
