The Lady Jaguars basketball team opened their 2008-09 season with a win against Benedict College at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Lady Jags upset the Lady Tigers 84-75 and broke personal records with senior Tracey Paschal, setting a new career high with 28 points. The game marked Head Coach Tes Sobomehin's first game leading the Lady Jaguars at Augusta State University.
Sobohehin had the girls running hard on the offensive and pushed the full court press to help in several key plays that kept the Lady Tigers on their heels. Sobohehin was named the Lady Jaguars head coach in June and is the seventh head coach for the girl's basketball team.
The Jags returned six of it's top seven scorers and three starters, including junior psychology major Jasmine Godwin, and junior criminal justice major Nicole Mealing, who averaged 10.0 and 9.8 points respectively in the 2007-08 season.
Mealing led the Lady Jags with 11 rebounds, and Paschal led the girls in points scored along with breaking her previous career high.
Before the game the 07-08 Lady Jags were given their Peach Belt Conference championship rings when they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
During the Thanksgiving break, the Lady Jags faced some minor setback with two losses to Wingate and Tusculum. During the Tusculum game, both teams had a combined 96 free throws, 72 fouls, and five of the eight players who fouled out during the game were Jaguars. Mealing had her second double-double and racked up 21 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Jags fought a back and forth battle against Wingate, but ended up losing 90-76 in the OrthoCarolina Classic, placing the Lady Jags at 1-2 for the season thus far.
The Jags hit the road Wednesday for a matchup against Newberry and return Saturday for their game against Paine College in Augusta.
