It was a night for the fans, and the team certainly delivered an awesome show. School spirit was running up and down the bleachers, with the majority of the crowd on their feet throughout the duration of the game, and members of the Blue Crew, Augusta State University's own group of super loyal and mega-dedicated student fans, were decked out in blue and white war paint, roaring in support of the Jaguars.
There was only standing room in Christenberry Fieldhouse as the crowds looked on to see Ben Magden, a junior business management major, score a career-high 33 points, making 11 shots from the field, four 3-pointers and seven free throws.
"Yeah, we played really well as a team; we shot well, rebounded well, and everyone did (his) part," Magden said.
On netting a career high Magden said with a smile, "Yeah, I was surprised. I didn't think I had that many (points), but hey, I'll take it. It was a good game."
Garret Siler shot 100 percent the entire night, making four shots from the floor and two free throws. Siler faced a rough night warding off opposing Pacers, who were practically allowed to put everything they had into boxing him out. Even with little help from the referees, Siler racked up 10 points for the Jags and several key blocks.
"I'm very pleased," Head Coach Dip Metress said of his team's performance. "We kept our composure (and) played well. We had a couple of bad stretches, but for the most part, we played our style of game and got the ball inside.
But as for the referee's performance, Metress said, "I don't want to go there; I don't want to go there."
Daniel Dixon, aka "the Flea," boosted team morale with two steals and three defensive rebounds.
"The hard game was won last Sunday morning," Metress said. "We practiced at 1 o'clock ,and I walked in the gym at 12 o'clock, and our players were in there shooting, and we shot the ball well. I knew at 12 o'clock Sunday that we were in great shape."
Augusta State lead the Pacers by double digits on and off throughout the first half and were leading 33-24 with five minutes left until halftime.
At the half, the Jaguars were winning 43-35 and were shooting 55.6 percent from the floor and were shooting 37.5 percent in 3-pointers, as compared to USC Aiken's 48.4 percent and 22.2 percent, respectively.
