Approximately 400 parents will be attending the olympiad, which will present some additional challenges.
"We also have to worry about keeping parents under control," Hobbs said. "We don't want some parent trying to give their kid that last bit of help before they go into an event."
Events like Science Olympiad are used to encourage students to take an interest in science outside of the classroom.
"(This event) is a good way of generating interest in an awareness of science in a better way than something like Science Bowl or Science Fair," said Wellnitz.
Hobbs said the department needs as many student-volunteers as it can get to help with the Science Olympiad.
Volunteers are needed to help with everything from putting together registration packets to helping serve food.
Registration begins on Thursday, May 14 at 9 a.m. and goes until 5 p.m. on Friday. Registration will begin again at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, with the opening ceremony beginning that night at 6. Events will run Saturday from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., with the awards ceremonies beginning that night at 6:15. Anyone interested in volunteering should visit the National Science Olympiad's page at www.aug.edu/nso.
