BR: How are you feeling right now after starting the season off with two second-place finishes and after winning your two past events?
Gregory: Obviously, we're playing our best game at the right time of the year for us to start on a high note with two seconds. We've played OK since then but nothing special. And then, the last two events we've tried a bunch of different lineups throughout the whole year and finally settled on our top five and to go out and win the past two tournaments with such great fields and such commanding fashion. We shot 17 under par at Bulls Bay in Charleston and then 36 under par at our home tournament. To win by eight and 13 shots is a pretty commanding victory. Obviously, this is the time of year we want to be playing our best golf, heading into NCAA regionals and hopefully the NCAA championships. Hopefully, we're peaking at the right time of year. This has probably been the best golf that I've seen in my seven years here. These last two events have been the best we've ever played.
BR: So, what's been the secret this season?
Gregory: A combination of finding the right lineup has been good. I think for rhe last year our best player, Henrik Norlander (a sophomore pre-management major), has pretty much kind of carried the team. We've had guys step up (such as) Janne Kaske, a senior (marketing major)from Finland. We've had Taylor Floyd, who won our home event, an (undeclared) freshman, and Jake Amos, (a junior sociology major), has finished in the top 10 as well at the last two events. We've had other guys step up and play well, and I think thats the biggest thing. Each event, we've had at least three guys in the top 20, and at this last event, we had four guys in the top 15. That's been something that's been more balance, more depth, and just I've tried to challenge the guys to play as individuals. Sometimes golf is such a team sport. It's a team sport, but at the same time, you look at it as an individual game. So (I) just really tried to challenge them to play as individuals, and when they go out to the golf course, (they should) just pretend that there are no other teammates. Out there, (they should) just pretend it's just them out there playing (alone). Then they play a lot better during the summer, and then in qualifying. (I'm) just trying to get them to play as individuals. Whatever we're doing is working, so hopefully, we can keep riding it out.
