Both men and women tennis players have funny and improbable superstitions before or during their matches.

Marina Ferreira, a freshman business major, said that if she played a good match with a certain top or skirt, she must wear the same article of clothing in her next match. Moreover, before she plays her own match, she usually observes the girls who are playing before her. Ferreira said that she always sits in the same chair of the girl who won the match.

As for Bernardo Fernandes, a freshman management major, he said that a few years ago, he had two different rackets. One was white on one side and red on the other side. His other racket was black and yellow.

"I played with the white side or the yellow side, only," Fernandes said.

However, if Fernandes was winning his match, he said that he would switch the side of his racket to play a break point or a match point. Thus, if he was playing with his black and yellow racket, Fernandes said he had to play with the black side.

Laura Ferreira, who graduated last semester, said she used to have certain steps to follow when she was warming up.

"I always had to warm-up on the same side of the court, the one that was facing the golf course," Ferreira said.

Both players Luiza Pires, a junior political science major, and Jenner Stevenson, a sophomore art major, said that they have to finish with a good shot when they warm-up.

"I can't miss my last serve, last backhand or last forehand," Pires said. "If I do, I ask (my opponent) to feed another ball."

As for Stevenson, he said that his toes have to be right in the edge of the line when he is walking on the court between two points. Stevenson added that he has to serve with the first ball he first touched or saw.

On the women's team, Nathalia Rodriguez, a senior business management major, said she had to kiss the charm of her necklace between every single match she plays.

On April 17, the men's team lost in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference against No 1 Armstrong Atlantic State University. On the women's team, Augusta State University lost 5-2 against Clayton State University. As for now, the men's team is ranked No. 24 in the nation, and the women's team is ranked No. 19 in the nation.

At the banquet that was hosted on the campus of Clayton State in Clayton, Ga., Rodriguez was named All-Conference's first team. Both Rodriguez and Fernanda Chaiparini, a senior business management major, were named to the Conference's doubles second team.

The tennis squads will play in the NCAA regional from May 7 to 9. The location has not yet been announced.
