How would you like it if you came to a campus the smelled like rotten food and had graffiti on the walls? Would this be a place where you would want to learn?
No.

Because the university has a custodial staff, students assume they don't have to clean up after themselves. But this is dead wrong. It is not the custodian's job to pick up your left over food from the floor in the JSAC. That is your job. You bought it and you should throw it away. There are trash cans everywhere. Use them.

It is also not their job to scrape off old gum from under desks, which is disgusting, or to scrub graffiti and cheat notes off of table tops. If you're a smoker, put your butts in the ashtray, don't pollute the campus while polluting your lungs.

The problem is that students don't think into the future. You may only be here for four years, but the university will be here for years after. With budget cuts, the university may not be able to replace all the things destroyed by students. Don't let your sorryness contribute to the de-beatification of the campus.

Who knows you might decide years later that you want to continue your education here. Don't you want the campus to still be beautiful then?

The university has more than 7,000 students and has a custodial staff that's no where near that. They can only clean up after students so much without getting completely overwhelmed. You wouldn't stick gum under your coffee table or throw your cigarette butts in your front yard or write your name on your kitchen table, so don't do it here either. Take the five extra seconds to throw your things away. The custodial staff will thank you.
