Literacy Center improving educational excellence in community
Patrick Riley
Issue date: 1/26/10 Section: Arts & Life
According to the National Literacy Act, 1991, "The term 'literacy' means an individual's ability to read, write, and speak in English, and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one's goals and develop one's knowledge and potential."
With the advent of many tutoring facilities such as Sylvan Learning centers, one would be excited for the opportunity until they learned the high price of tutoring. Many parents are not able to afford the cost of a personal tutor. The ASU literacy center was founded as a free service to the public.
Education is very important and everyone should have free and equal access to educational benefits and a chance at academic excellence, after all the students of today are our future. The core value statement of the literacy center, according to the website, is "We believe that literacy instruction must be accessible for all.
We provide positive literacy tutorial experiences that support the development of individuals who not only know how to read but also want to read."
With all programs there is always room for improvement. With the ever increasing success of this project there is a considerable need for more space and a larger building. Dr. Paulette Harris, director, discloses, "We keep a waiting list, and our goal is to have ample space and more tutors to be able to help everyone who is in need."
There are tentative plans in the making for a College of Education and Nursing building to be built near the Christenberry Field house in the coming years that will give the Literacy Center a new and improved home.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor or donating books and magazines or other usable supplies contact Dr. Paulette Harris, or email: literacycenter@aug.edu.
