In 1997 the Spanish club co-sponsored the dinner with the Native American Club and the International Students Club, founded by Magali Duignan, associate professor on English in Learning Support. In 2000, Alpha Mu Gamma was a co-sponsor of the Thanksgiving pot luck, and after 2001, the International Students Club became the sole sponsor. Gina Thurman, assistant dean of students, is the current advisor to the International Students Club, which is a club open to all students, not just internationals.
The first study abroad program at Augusta College was a trip to Mexico in 1982. After my trips to Mexico, Spain and France, the University System of Georgia asked if I would direct programs in Salamanca, Spain, and in Puebla and Guadalajara, Mexico. In the 1990s, Chris Bourdouvalis, professor of political science, began a program in Greece and Janice Whiting, professor of art, began taking students to study art in Italy. Bourdouvalis also formed Augusta State's study abroad office which is directed today by Holly Carter, assistant vice president of international affairs.
