Many of the internationally oriented organizations at Augusta State University were founded in the 1980s when we were Augusta College.

In 1982, I founded the Spanish club, Los Amigos Hispanos, which continues to be very active. Members practice Spanish at weekly conversation groups called tertulias, and they sponsor events such as Hispanic dances, festivals, concerts, contests, movies, literary discussions, picnics and treasure hunts.

Students often visited museums in Columbia, S.C. and Atlanta as well as their annual excursion to St. Augustine, Florida. Los Amigos Hispanos has held an annual Christmas collection for needy Hispanic families since 2000. I have been the Spanish club's advisor since its inception.

German and French students meet to practice the language and enjoy cultural activities, but they are not chartered clubs at Augusta State.

In 1981, I founded the Iota Phi chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma, a national collegiate foreign language honor society, at Augusta College. I was the sponsor for about a decade; the current faculty advisor is Pedro Hoyos Salcedo, associate professor of Spanish.

In 1986 I co-founded the local Hispanic organization, the Asociación Cultural Hispanoamericana (ACHA), which has sponsored the annual Hispanic festival since 1992. Students from Los Amigos Hispanos work at the festival every year.

The Augusta State Faculty Club was founded by Laura Ann Stevens in 1992. Through the Faculty Club, I place international students in faculty homes for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

The Augusta College International Friendship Program was founded in 1996 by Lee Bollinger and me. We set up a mentoring program which paired new international students with Augusta College's students and faculty. This program continues to serve our growing number of international students.

In 1996 Los Amigos Hispanos began sponsoring an annual covered dish International Thanksgiving Dinner the Friday before Thanksgiving, featuring an international fashion show, displays, music and dancing.
