The Books for Charity program is a nonprofit organization that strives for change in the lives of children who need it most.

Kirsten and John O'Connor originally founded the organization in Bainbridge, N.Y., with the goal of bettering people and children through different media. including donated books that they in turn donate to schools, and other organizations, around the world.

The Books for Charity mission states on its Web site: "The Corporation creates and supports projects that use the power of photography and the visual arts to change children's lives, in our efforts to ease the suffering caused by physical, mental, societal and environmental ills, in addition our organization exists to enhance people's lives through education, the arts and other life enriching pursuits."

According to its Web site, Books For Charity Inc. accepts many forms of donations, and these donations are not limited to books, so that the organizations can reach more people.

"We are looking for cash, property or eBay auction items as donations to help our National Children's Mental Health Fund," according to the organization's Web site.

Augusta State University made many donation boxes available at the beginning and the end of the fall 2009 semester.

Boxes used to collected donated used books were located at all of the text book buy-back locations on campus. There is also a box set up outside the bookstore. The boxes are maintained by the Augusta State University bookstore.

According to Eva Martin, the merchandise buyer for the campus bookstore, the bookstore sends donated books to many charity outlets, including Books For Charity. These books are eventually sent to third-world countries that are in desperate need of books. Martin recalled that the Augusta State bookstore has been working with Books For Charity for "several years."

Not many students know of this company, but when asked if they would donate books, three Augusta State students that were interviewed said that they would be glad to donate their used text books to charity.
